Agility
Agility is a great form of exercise for your dog and a fantastic bonding activity for you both. It’s also very addictive!! The are many different levels of ability and the courses will get more demanding as both dog and owner progress. Most dogs can take part and can range from collies to chows and rotties to russells.
There are two main types of class run at most shows. Agility – which will include contact equipment such as A frames, dog walks and see-saws. And Jumping which will mainly consist of jumps and tunnels. Other equipment included could be the weaves, tables, water jumps, tyres and wishing wells. There are also fun classes such as Helter skelter, Time fault and out and Gamblers. Some shows also run team events for two three or four dogs to run as a relay.
The jump heights will also change depending on the size of the dog and older dogs can still join in with the Veterans classes. The runs can be very fast and may only last 20 seconds from start to finish but the adrenaline buzz for you and your dog is amazing. There are many clubs around the country that you can join and most will take beginners. A certain level of obedience is needed as you do need to be able to control your dog. It also pays to ask the vet to check that your dog is fit enough for agility as it can be a very energetic sport. I am qualified as an Approved Agility Instructor with the Agility Club and have structured lessons for groups and individuals ranging from beginners to very experienced handlers. Methods used are positive and dog friendly.
